Google Has Often Failed At AI, But They Have Hit It Out Of The Park – For ELLs, At Least – With New “Storybook”

Google has struggled mightily in developing Artificial Intelligence tools that are actually useful.

In my opinion, at least, NotebookLM has been the only thing they’ve come up that actually has any value.

Up until today.

They just announced the Gemini Storybook feature.  Go to it here.

In seconds, it will create an…illustrated storybook about anything you want using pretty much any parameters, and it also includes audio support for the text.

I gave it this prompt:

Tell a story about Lionel Messi using the verb “to be” in various tenses. Make it accessible to a Beginning English Language Learner.

Here’s what created in seconds.

I gave it this prompt:

Explain the woman’s suffrage movement

Here’s what it created.

As I’ve said many times, I use very little tech in the classroom with English Language Learners – having peer tutors read a paper book with students trumps any AI any day.

However, having this kind of tech available to students at home where no one else speaks English is a gift.  Speaking of high interest texts – students can have the AI create an accessible text about any subject it wants.
